BIOGRAPHY
1963

Born in Bendigo, Australia. First music studies in classical guitar during secondary education.

1981 - 1985

Private study in classical guitar with Brian Lewis, Peter Lynch and Jochen Schubert, in conjunction with 3 years complete study in medicine, The University of Melbourne.

Initial professional music performances during this period.

1986 - 1989

Full time study at the Victorian College of the Arts, majoring in classical guitar performance, arrangement and composition. Teachers Peter Lynch, Jochen Schubert and master classes with John Williams, Timothy Kain, Paco Pena.

First performances (recitals at the Victorian Arts Centre) commenced in 1987 and first performances for the Melbourne International Festival (formerly the 'Spoleto Festival') in 1987 also.

1990

Further study at the Victorian College of the Arts with Doug De Vries, majoring in improvisation performance.

First recording for the ABC, May 1990, featuring six original compositions by Matthew Fagan, produced by Lydia Warrin for ABC-FM.

1991

Graduation Diploma of Arts, Victorian College of the Arts.

Performance at Australian music festivals, including the Port Fairy Music Festival, the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, the Melbourne International Festival.

Live broadcast for ABC-FM In Recital, September 1991.

First recording produced December 1991 'Acoustic Guitar Music' with Martin Austin.

Matthew Fagan admission as full member writer-composer for the Australasian Performing Right Association.

1992

Formation of the group 'Solstice', Matthew Fagan, guitar; Martin Austin, guitar; Rowan Crosbie-Goold, piano.

Solstice record debut CD 'Point of Departure' released by Newmarket Records. Successful airplay on ABC-Radio nationally. Performances at festivals as in 1991, including the Montsalvat Jazz Festival.

1993 - 1994 First international travel, including private study at the Royal College London, live performance in the foyers of Royal Festival Hall, performances in jazz clubs Brighton and recording in Devon, United Kingdom. Performances in jazz clubs New York and New Orleans, United States of America, and private classical guitar performance and composition study.
1995

Upon return from overseas, Solstice perform in May at the Melbourne Concert Hall in a programme entirely of Matthew Fagan's original music.

July 1995. Matthew Fagan performs in a solo recital at the Darwin International Guitar Festival and also performs with guitarist Slava Grigoryan in duo recitals at the Darwin Festival. This marks the formation of the musical friendship of these two guitarists.

Extensive study, including master classes with John Williams, Timothy Kain and international musicians in performance and composition (with Gerard Brophy, Queensland Conservatorium of Music), an excellent event for networking.

1996

Matthew Fagan receives first commission as a composer to compose suite for the Orana Chamber Orchestra, first performed on March 17, 1996 at the Melbourne Concert Hall.

Formation of the group 'Gypsy Fire' featuring Rornana Geermans, violin, graduate from the Prague Conservatorium of Music.

Matthew Fagan begins association with The National Gallery of Victoria for highly successful concert series and lecture series that continues in 1997.

Matthew Fagan commences studies in composition and performance at the School of Music, Monash University.

Recording of 'Indigo Moon' at Atlantis Studios, Melbourne. This recording is a landmark in Matthew Fagan's career, being comprised of nine original compositions, three of which include full chamber orchestra with guitar and percussion.

1997

Matthew Fagan signs with Cellar Music/Warner Chappel Publishing and Sonart Music for national and international release of 'Indigo Moon'.

Further appearances as a soloist and with 'Gypsy Fire' at the Port Fairy Music Festival, Canberra National Folk Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Festival of the Arts.

Recordings for ABC-Radio with Slava Grigoryan, the Chevalier String Orchestra and also in solo recital.

January 1997. Matthew Fagan is formally invited to join Andrew Richardson's 'Howlin Wind' group as guitarist and composer.

August 1997. National release of 'Indigo Moon' by Sonart with concerts scheduled in Melbourne and Sydney in September and October. (5 October - Matthew Fagan in Concert, National Gallery of Victoria, and 13 October 1997 - In Concert, Continental Cafe Melbourne. 13 September - Gypsy Fire In Concert, Harbourside Brasserie, Sydney).

1998 Extensive touring throughout Australia
1999 Guest artist on tour throughout Australia with Billy Connolly, Shirley Bassey, Michael Crawford. Great reviews and continued success with Indigo Moon.
2000

Recipient of Victorian Arts Council Grant "The New Celtic Suite." Performances of orchestral work at National Gallery Victoria, Government House Victoria, Bailleau Myer residence, St John's Southgate.

September 2000. First international tour with Princess Cruises to Mediterranean, Black Sea, Middle East, Africa and South America.

2001

Brief return to Australia, tour as guest artist with "The Buena Vista Social Club". Return to sea, performing North America, Canada, Alaska to Russia, China, Japan, South East Asia.

2003

Return to Australia. Commence work on Voyages and recording/performing with Rona Iranian Music Ensemble, Indigenous Australia Music. Completion Bachelor of Music, Monash University, in Ethnomusicology and Composition.

March 13th 2003. Premiere of Voyages Shepparton Festival. Commence full-time recording Atlantis Studios.

2004

Commissioned as Music Director/Composer by Victorian Government and Pan Events of Voyages Australia Day Public Concert, Federation Square (audience estimated 20,000).

Five regional centre commissions of Voyages by Vic Health and Arts Victoria: full-time production/recording Atlantis Studios Melbourne including Frankston Guitar Festival, major orchestral concerts in Shires of Colac, Portland, Swan Hill, Warburton and Robinvale. Ongoing commissions from Pan Events.
